RUSTIC LUCKY JAPANESE TEA CUP (MID-SHOWA)

The vaguely milky glaze of these Japanese tea cups is a characteristic of Shino-ware, a style of pottery originating in the Mino and Seto areas of Japan, best known for its rustic appearance yet lightweight feel.

Each is individually handmade and glazed in a soft blue-grey. We love the serendipitous details — non-uniform shape, crackled glaze, light speckling and the burnt orange highlights of the clay beneath. The previous owner isn't sure what the white dashes signify. It could be the kanji for wheat, but she likes to think it's the character for "kotobuki" meaning "good luck."
